Rome offers much more than the usual tourist spots, and with our conference located near Stazione Termini, you’re in the perfect spot to explore.
Trains, buses, and airports are easily accessible, making it convenient to get around. Here’s a guide for dining, unique places to visit, and transport tips from a Roman:
Where to Eat:
- Romantic Dinner: Our favorite restaurant for special dinner (or lunch!) is “I Clementini“. Located very close to Colosseum, in front of the Basilica di San Clemente for an authentic Italian experience. Book “outdoor” seating in advance, you will not regreat.
- Trastevere Gem: Head to Miraggio in Trastevere, our local trattoria favorite on Via della Lungara. A quiet and authentic option away from the tourist crowds.
What to Visit out of the touristic Routes:
- Don’t miss to discover underground Rome: Explore Domus Aurea, Le Case Romane del Celio, and the Basilica di San Clemente‘s underground for a deep dive into Rome’s historical layers. You will see how roman builds the present over the past. And if you have time, take the chance to discover also the Via delle Acque.
- Panoramic Views: Visit Castel Sant’Angelo for stunning views of Rome. Castel Sant’Angelo is a perfect embodiment of Rome’s layered history, and this is something you feel as you ascend through its levels. Originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian, it later became a fortress, a papal residence, and even a prison. The panoramic view from the top is simply breathtaking, offering a sweeping vista of the city’s timeless beauty. Here you can see a photo taken there with participants from the very first Rome FileMaker Week, a reminder of how history and community intertwine in such an extraordinary way.
- One of the most fun and unique hidden gems in Rome is the keyhole of the Knights of Malta Garden. Located on the Aventine Hill, this keyhole offers a perfectly framed view of St. Peter’s Basilica, and peeking through it feels almost magical. It’s a delightful little secret that surprises everyone who experiences it. This quirky spot is definitely a must-see, especially for those who enjoy discovering the city’s playful side beyond the usual landmarks.
- Vatican Museums: Skip the lines with an official guided tour to enjoy the wonders of Vatican art and history. I’ve visited the Vatican Museums countless times—whether as a student or showing family from Brazil (I’m half Brazilian!). Each visit leaves me in awe, as there’s always something new that takes my breath away. Of course, the Sistine Chapel is iconic, but my personal favorites are the Gallery of Tapestries and the Gallery of Maps, with their incredible artistry and detail. These halls capture the beauty and history of the Vatican, offering moments of wonder no matter how many times I return. Don’t forget to look up to the stunning decorated ceilings.
- Cassino Abbey: Just outside Rome, on the way to Naples and Amalfi coast, take some time to visit Monte Cassino Abbey, a historical WWII site with deep American-Italian roots. The Abbey of Monte Cassino holds a special place in my heart—one of the most inspiring yet sorrowful sites I have ever visited. Each time I find myself nearby, I take the opportunity to return. The moment you climb its steps, you’re greeted by a breathtaking view that stuns you with its beauty and history. From that vantage point, you can see the serene landscape, but also the war cemeteries, a solemn reminder of the tragic events that unfolded here during World War II. It never fails to leave me speechless.
Shopping & Relaxation:
- Castel Romano Outlet: Shop for Italian luxury brands at discounted prices, with convenient bus service from the city center.
- Drinks with a View: Head to the bar at Milite Ignoto in Piazza Venezia for affordable refreshments and then use the elevator for an amazing terrace view.
Transport Tips:
- Airports: Rome is served by two airports: Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci), the main international hub, and Ciampino, primarily for low-cost carriers. Both airports are easily connected to the city via trains and buses to Stazione Termini.
- Train Stations: Stazione Termini is the central train hub, connecting you to high-speed trains (Trenitalia and Italo) and regional lines.
- Bus Stations: For long-distance buses, Roma Tiburtina and Roma Termini bus stations serve as major hubs, with connections across Italy and Europe.
- Book everything through the official websites. To avoid skams, always use official WHITE taxi (we don’t have Uber as in other countries, but you can use the Uber app to call the official roman taxi), never anonymous cars.
With easy transport options, unique places to visit, and amazing dining experiences, we hope your time in Rome is one to remember!
